At the GS-05 level:
The incumbent serves as a trainee specialist learning how to prepare, evaluate and conduct biological analyses of wildlife ecology and biology in relationship to land and water resource projects. Learning to design and implement habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office or state office. Learning how to identify the impacts to wildlife habitat and threatened and endangered species by other resource activities. At the GS-07 Level:
the incumbent is expected to complete progressively more difficult developmental assignments that expand the employee's understanding of work site concepts and underlying principles and program requirements. Learning how to prepare, evaluate, and conduct progressively more complex biological analyses of wildlife ecology and behavior in as it relates to land and water resource projects. Independently design and assist in implementing habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office or state office. At the GS-09 level:
Responsible for assisting in preparing, evaluating and conducting biological analyses of land and water resource projects and permit applications to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law. Assists other resource specialists in conducting studies to determine solutions for disease control and other problems with wildlife species. Participates in monitoring on-going wildlife habitat development projects and the implementation of new projects within the field/district office. Designs and implements habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office in coordination with other programs, other federal agencies, state agency representatives and where possible with non-government organizations. At the full performance GS-11 grade level:
As a Wildlife Biologist, manage and perform professional, research or scientific work that involves conserving, protecting, and administering wildlife species. Provide oversight and assistance to the District/Field office biology program for the management of the surrounding ecology, behavior and conservation of habitat of wild animals as well as coordinating wildlife management programs with other natural resources activities, such as land use planning, forest and range management programs. Responsible to the field manager for all facets of wildlife program activity planning, implementation, and monitoring. Physical Demands:
The work includes indoor and outdoor work. May be required to walk or ride vehicles through rough terrain, perform duties that require bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or lifting. Work may include lifting moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples. Work Environment:
The incumbent works in an office setting, however, considerable field work is required to complete projects. The employee may be exposed to discomfort from harsh weather and may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemicals, and other physical hazards. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. This position has a Basic Education Requirement:
A degree in biological science that included:
(A) (1) At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; (2) At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects. (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); (3) At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences; --OR-- (B) A Combination of education and experience -- equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in (A) above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. To qualify at GS-05:

Meet the BASIC REQUIREMENT AND one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal service. At this level, work is entry-level with close supervision. Examples:
assist higher level professionals with vegetative management for riparian habitat maintenance & enhancement, and wildlife & fisheries habitat management by classifying habitat & vegetation types, determine habitat condition & improvement, contribute to planning documents; OR Meet the basic requirement AND I have one year of graduate education in wildlife biology or a directly related field; OR meet the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) See OPM Quals Standard-General Policies E(4)(f); OR meet the basic requirement AND I possess an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. To qualify at GS-09:
Meet the BASIC REQUIREMENT AND one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as demonstrated examples in the following:
Planning and conducting wildlife field inventories & monitoring studies, interpret data and assist in preparing wildlife management plans; preparing reports; recommending habitat management practices; --OR-- Completion of two (2) full years of graduate level education in a directly related field leading to a mater's degree in wildlife biology or related field such as mammology, ornithology, animal ecology, or wildlife management; --OR-- A combination of professional experience and third year graduate level education for a total of one (1) year. To qualify at GS-11:
Meet the BASIC REQUIREMENT AND one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as demonstrated examples in the following:
Preparing wildlife portions of environmental assessments, analyzing surface use proposals on Threatened and Endangered Species, planning and conducting wildlife field inventories and monitoring studies, and interpreting data and preparing wildlife management plans; --OR-- Completion of three (3) full years of graduate level education in a directly related field leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph. D. or equivalent doctoral degree in wildlife biology or related field such as mammology, ornithology, animal ecology, or wildlife management; --OR-- A combination of professional experience and third year graduate level education for a total of one (1) year. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
